The carbon removal industry won’t scale to where we need it with just big ideas and large amounts of money (though we need both!). We need to know which ideas need the right amount of funding at the right time. We need to make our catalytic capital as effective as possible.
That’s why we’ve established our Carbon Council— a diverse group of experts in climate science, technology, finance, and social justice that will help us identify the most high-potential carbon removal projects for our philanthropic purchases.
We’ve already purchased hundreds of tons of carbon removal from Charm Industrial, Heirloom, Octavia Carbon, Andes, Capture6, and Spiritus, and the Frontier portfolio. But the goal is gigatons, so we’ve got a whole lot of work ahead. And with the Carbon Council, we’re doubling down on our project evaluation and selection strategy.
Our inaugural Carbon Council members include:
Jennifer Wagner: Fellow at Breakthrough Energy
Jennifer is a climate tech executive and Breakthrough Energy Fellow, dedicated to advancing carbon removal and industrial decarbonization solutions. With a track record of scaling startups both as an executive and as a coach, she’s been recognized as one of 20 Women Driving The Future of Climate Tech, Business Insider’s Clean Energy Rising Stars, Canada’s Clean50 Emerging Leaders, and the Climate Action Summit’s Climate Trailblazers.
Sophie Purdom: Managing Partner at Planeteer Capital & Co-Founder of CTVC
Sophie Purdom invests in and supports early-stage climate tech founders and their companies with Planeteer Capital - often as the earliest, climate-first investor. She also writes CTVC, a newsletter & strategic data platform with 70,000+ subscribers featured in Financial Times, NY Times, Bloomberg and other major outlets as climate tech's source of record.
Dr. Marcius Extavour: CEO of Extempo Solutions
Dr. Marcius Extavour works at the intersection of business, technology finance, and media to build solutions to climate, energy, and deep tech problems. He has launched media products at TIME, led global innovation competitions as Chief Scientist at XPRIZE, and shaped federal policy in the U.S. Senate.

Na’im is a leader in carbon dioxide removal, and has helped shape the sector through consulting and policy development. He previously ran Carbon Curve - consulting with Carbon180, CarbonPlan, ClimateWorks Foundation, and Clean Air Task Force, and was part of the founding team that launched Carbon Removal Canada.
Greg Matlock: Global Energy & Resources Tax Leader at EY

He specializes in energy transition investments and advises on transactions involving various energy technologies, including solar, wind, carbon capture use and sequestration, waste-to-energy, hydrogen (blue, green, and other variants), battery and energy storage, biomass and biofuels, geothermal, and certain other energy-efficient sources.
Kailani Acosta: PhD Candidate at Columbia University
Kailani is a sixth-year PhD candidate at Columbia University, exploring nutrient cycling and ecosystem modeling in the Gulf of Mexico. Committed to diversity in STEM, she has led DEI initiatives, created interdisciplinary exhibitions linking science, culture, and the environment, and is currently serving as one of the Early Career Liaisons for the U.S. National Committee for the UN Ocean Decade.
With the help of our Carbon Council, we’re stepping up our game. It’s all about making sure your donations drive real impact on the planet. Let's do this!
